A green triumph for Allianz Arena
Football club FC Bayern isn’t content just winning on the pitch; the club also wants to come out ahead in energy conservation and social responsibility.
The football club, which calls Munich, Germany home, recently entered into a long-term partnership with Imtech to make drastic cuts in energy consumption and the energy costs associated with operating the Allianz Arena and training pitches. Ten measures will be implemented over the coming months to make the Allianz Arena the perfect example of a green stadium.
A thorough analysis
These measures were based on a thorough analysis that Imtech conducted on FC Bayern’s complexes. The analysis revealed a potential to save around 2,000 MWh of energy and reduce CO2 emissions by 1,100 tons a year. The investment needed to improve the sustainability of these complexes will be recovered within five years.
35% savings on energy
Imtech has earned an excellent reputation when it comes to energy efficiency in stadiums. One of Imtech’s previous projects involved the greening of an arena (the Imtech Arena) used by HSV, a leading European club based in Hamburg, Germany. Thanks to Imtech’s energy-conserving concept, energy consumption in this stadium was reduced by 3,000 MWh/year (approximately 35%), and CO2 emissions were reduced by 1,200 tons. Imtech will also provide energy-conserving technological solutions for the Mercedes-Benz Arena, where VfB Stuttgart has its home base and Imtech is serving as a technology partner for three stadiums in Poland that will be venues for the European Football Championship in 2012.
Competency centre
To consolidate all of its knowledge relating to green stadiums, Imtech opened a competency centre, Stadion- und Arenatechnik, in Munich in 2010.
