Copenhagen: a carbon-neutral metropolis

The ambitions of the Danish capital city are as clear as can be: Copenhagen is committed to setting the trend as one of the world’s greenest cities. It wants to be completely carbon neutral by 2025. To achieve this, the city has launched more than 50 sustainability projects for its public transport, its transport sector, and its entire logistical setting. Copenhagen has called in Imtech to help make its CSR dreams come true.

Perfecting its traffic flow
Traffic now generates 21% of Copenhagen’s total CO2 emissions, but Imtech’s high-tech traffic technology should be able to reduce this to 10% by 2015. Imtech has been given the task of upgrading, improving and repairing all 365 intersections in the city. This includes the installation of a traffic management system based on ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems) technology. New high-tech traffic controllers will be linked to a real-time remote monitoring system to optimise the sustainable, safe circulation of buses, bicycles, cars and freight traffic.

Cooperative traffic systems
Imtech believes that a key solution for the future is the use of cooperative systems in which vehicles and the traffic infrastructure exchange real-time information about the immediate surroundings and other road users. This will improve mobility and road safety, and reduce congestion-related costs, fuel consumption and emissions. Imtech is closely involved in various international projects working to continue the development of these kinds of high-tech traffic management.
